Leila’s Birthday Song

The moss on the trees had an extra green glow
And the squirrels all were singing
The clouds in the sky looked like raspberry pie
And all the telephones were ringing
The guitars and fiddles were jumping around
And they all had this to say
Happy birthday, dear Leila, we’re all just so glad that
You’re two years old today

All the Legos were doing the tango
And a banana went sailing by
It peeled itself and jumped into the middle
Of a slice of banana cream pie
In came a horse, through the back door
And then it started to bray
Happy birthday, dear Leila, we’re all just so glad that
You’re two years old today

The paints began painting, the monkeys were fainting
The cows were jumping over the moon
Coyotes were howling, ow-ow-ow-owling
Singing a beautiful tune
The pancakes were flipping, the whipped cream was whipping
And forming a sweet bouquet
Happy birthday, dear Leila, we’re all just so glad that
You’re two years old today

Leila’s Birthday Song

“Leila’s Birthday Song” appears on my second CD of children’s music, Ballad of a Dung Beetle (2011).

I wrote the song just before Leila’s second birthday, in January, 2008.  It’s not a simple song to play, necessarily, but I think it’s nice to have alternate birthday songs, since I got sick of the most well-known one a long time ago, having heard it way too many times.  But “Leila’s Birthday Song” can work fine for the birthday of any little kid, if you just change the name in it to the name of the birthday kid in question…
